Surcharges allowed with state conditionsAct 751 of 2026 (SB 254), in effect since August 1, 2026, bars retail businesses from surcharging customers who pay by debit card. It does not cover credit cards, and no Louisiana statute limiting credit card surcharges was found. The Attorney General enforces the debit rule, with civil penalties up to $500, and customers may sue after giving 30 days' written notice.
